Copy Machines- a Security Risk
I'm posting a youtube news video that I hope that everyone will take the time to watch- it is an eye opener to say the least about the dangers of digital copiers. And this is why we never donate a computer- we take the hard drive out of it and smash it to smithereens with a hammer...same goes for our copier/scanner/fax machines.

Haiti
By now everyone all over the world has heard about the terrible devastation that has occurred in Haiti. I want to encourage you to give if you can. I have no heartfelt story to tell you of some past trip or connection to anyone who has been there. I have only this to say - these are people that have a suffered a terrible tragedy and are in need of our compassion

Snow in England
I thought that I was moving to a place that had "mild winters"- so much for that! I want to let you all know that this is not mild weather, not at all! Granted the snow fall is not to the extent that we had in South Dakota BUT what we do have has managed to bring many parts of this country into a complete standstill. My heart goes out to the 5000 plus families who have lost electricity to their homes.
My children shoveled the drive way and cleared the walk ways yesterday. It's a heavy wet snow and this is going to take a while to clear. Many towns have run out of grit for the roads. It's not that this area is totally unprepared it's that this amount of snow fall is so rare how can you really prepare for something that happens so infrequently?
In case you're wondering- the painter never did make it back to our house, LOL!

Remembering 9/11
As I work around my housetoday, I'm feeling this rush of emotion coming over me. Part of me is glad that I'm here in the UK today as the TV is not saturated with replays of news coverage from the 9/11 tragedy. I still can not bring myself to watch the jets crashing into the Twin Towers without bursting into tears. My heart aches for all those who lost someone that day. To know that terrorism was done on US soil is frightening.

a different point of view
I find it exceedingly humorous and sad at the same time when actors go on and on about their wages and life style and how they want privacy. Here we are in the military, many families are having hardships due to deployments, some having hardships due to being overseas like - having a family member back home sick with Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's (like my Dad), Heart Disease( I can go on and on with this) back in in the states and are unable to afford the airplane ticket home. I'd like to see these multi-millionaires set up relief funds to help out our military families. Heck, I'd like to see these same actors and actresses spend money on feeding the hungry and the homeless in the USA or where ever their Home Country is- the people that are really responsible for those actors being millionaires in the first place.
I find that I can't look away from the train wreck called "Jon & Kate plus 8". From the first time my husband and I watched this show we saw Jon for who he really is- a sneaky responsibility shirking worm. He's about himself and always has been. Look at his current actions and to me it's just plain obvious that Kate was dealing with his cheating ways for quite some time.
I suppose our observations are due to us seeing military families and how they interact after a long separation to seeing civilian families and how they interact in general. Military families (for the most part) are caring and loving and support one another through the thick and the thin. Military families cherish each moment together since they can be sent on a deployment at the drop of a hat and the part that makes you have a lump in your throat is that sometimes they don't come back from a deployment. And to be honest, I don't know of a single military husband that does not take time out to help his wife with the kids and household chores.
Just from watching the show and taking general observations from it, Jon was always shirking his responsibilities and was great at making his wife out to be "the bad guy-all of the time". Jon would come home and want to be "the FUN parent" while leaving Kate to be the parent who had to take care of enforcing the rules. I see this a lot in civilian families.
Taking care of 8 kids plus take care of a household, taking kids to various doctor appointments, cooking, cleaning, doing the laundry etc- I don't think there's a single woman out there that could have come off looking graceful and fresh after a day spent in the company of 8 very active children. Then top that off with a husband that's been cheating on me with pictures of his infidelity that's all over the news and printed in the tabloids, I think that Kate shows great self control, dignity and class.
At the end of the day, I'm happy and proud to be a military wife. I like the life I have, it's a good life. I feel that I've been blessed...through the good times and the depolyments, we military spouses stick together and support one another.

Tragedy touches our town
It's heart breaking to find out that a child has died, but somehow even more so when you know that the child attended school with one of your children and that the deceased child has a sibling that went to school with your other child. Here's the news story at the local news paper- Rapid City Journal. Please keep both families in your thoughts and prayers. The child that survived the horrible accident is friends with my sons girlfriend. My heart goes out to everyone...from the land owners whose property was destroyed/damaged in the accident, to those who found the young girls, to those in law enforcement who had to tell the parents of these teen-aged girls about the accident and especially the ones that had to inform the young girls parents of her death. As I was telling my children of this story is when I found out how much more I was connected to it all. Andrew really put it into perspective for me and drew all of the lines together for all of the connections.
And earlier today my dear friend Donna was telling me about the death of someone whom they were connected to but did not know personally. Donna...if you're reading this, THIS is exactly how I feel, it's that very same way about these 2 teen girls. Although I didn't know them I knew many others that were connected in other ways. It's like something that Clarence the Angel said in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" to George when he (George)realizes just what his life is about...isn't it strange how one life touches so many others. In case you didn't know it...it's something that is very real and true...one life does touch so many others. So please, hug your children, tell them they mean the world to you and hold them tight...because we never know when their lives can be cut short to be in heaven with our Lord.

10-Year-Old California Girl Battles Breast Cancer
For those of us that have daughters and those that have granddaughters, Breast Cancer Awareness is important. Please pop over to Fox News and read this story...breast cancer at 10 years old, who would have ever of thought it. I'm once again having a talk with my daughter about it.

Scrapbook Destination is closing it's doors :-(
I received this newsltter in my mail box yesterday and I have to say that I am saddened by the news...
Store Closing -- All Inventory 25% off
Dear Sandie,
I regret to announce that Scrapbook Destination will be closing its doors by the end of May. We are truly grateful to you, our customers, for your support and patronage. Unfortunately, the current economic climate makes it impossible for us to stay in business; the entire inventory is on sale 25% off (except a few items--see the store for details).
Beginning Saturday, May 9, all fixtures are for sale as well, including paper racks and fixtures, slat wall and hooks, grid panels and hooks, and assorted office equipment, stereo, tables, and more. All items are first-come, first-served; fixtures must be paid for at time of purchase, and those in use will be held until later in the month, as they are cleared and become available for removal. We will also be selling many of the fabulous samples you've admired in the store.
We will no longer be taking coupons as of today, and all sales are final. We are going to make an effort to contact the holder of every outstanding gift card; those cards are good as long as we have inventory to sell, and good on in-stock merchandise only. All $15 Frequent Buyer coupons will also be honored as long as we have merchandise to sell, but purchases will no longer accumulate toward reward. Accumulations of less than $200 cannot be redeemed for a reward; I hope you'll understand, since the program was always free and intended to benefit you, our customer.
If you have special orders outstanding, we are continuing to pursue those. You're welcome to check in with us regarding the status of your order; if you are unable to wait we're happy to refund your payment.
We are going forward with the Garage Sale on May 16 & 17; if you'd like to sign up for a table ($10 for a full table, $5 for a half table), we will be giving the proceeds as half cash, rather than 100% as a gift card.
Again, we thank you for your patronage these last two years; although I am sad to bring this chapter of my life to an end, I am glad to have been able to serve all of you. The staff and I will miss you, and we regret that there isn't another independent store between Colorado Springs and Northglenn. I wish that circumstances didn't require us to close. We hope to see you all in the coming weeks; we are expanding our hours during the closeout sale to 10 AM to 7 PM Monday, 10 AM to 6 PM Tuesday-Saturday, and 11 AM to 5 PM Sunday in order make it easier for you to shop during those hours.
Sincerely,
Mary Kay Seckinger

you've got to be joking...
So here I am checking on the weather and I get this...
Issued by The National Weather Service Rapid City, SD 3:10 pm MDT, Tue., Mar. 31, 2009
... NEXT SPRING STORM MAY IMPACT THE AREA FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY...
ANOTHER STRONG SPRING STORM SYSTEM WILL CROSS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN ROCKIES FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. THIS BROAD STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRING ANOTHER ROUND OF SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL AND STRONG WINDS TO MUCH OF THE AREA.
PRECIPITATION SHOULD BEGIN TO MOVE INTO THE AREA FRIDAY AFTERNOON AS RAIN OR SNOW... THEN CHANGE TO ALL SNOW FRIDAY NIGHT. AT THIS TIME IT APPEARS SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY SATURDAY BEFORE TAPERING LATE SATURDAY NIGHT OR EARLY SUNDAY.
THERE REMAINS UNCERTAINTY WITH THE STRENGTH... TIMING... AND EXACT TRACK OF THIS STORM SYSTEM.
Oh come on! We just had two freak snow storms, this is just too darn much! That's it, I'm packing up and moving to Florida! Well okay I'd need a couple of things to happen before I can escape the snow...for that to happen we would need the highway to open or the Airport to open and neither one is happening right now so I suppose that I'm stuck here!

Snow Pictures
There's nothing like snow and a lot of it to make you panic. Get a load of the view from My Scrapbook Nook...
Day 1- the view from the front that looks out the front of the house is surprising. Talk about feeling a little uneasy
This is the view out of the window out the window that looks towards the side of the house. This huge snow drift is just past my flowerbed full of lavender.
Snow Day #2- Here is Today's view- are you feeling a little claustrophobic yet? I know that I was!

Breast Cancer affects us all
Yesterday I found out that yet another friend had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. My friend Charlotte is an outgoing giving kind of woman who loves her family and takes care of Air Force Spouses. Her husband is career Air Force like mine. Breast Cancer does affect us all- even if our own blood relatives are not stricken with cancer then we most likely know a good friend who has.
My friend Tonya Waters died from breast cancer in 2003 about a month before we got out here to Ellsworth AFB, SD. I remember being so heart broken upon finding out that she lost her battle.
My mom's next door neighbor Belinda was diagnosed last fall with breast cancer and has since had surgery and radiation therapy.
My friend Robin is a 3 year Breast Cancer survivor and is doing well. I can't wait to see on on Saturday!
My friend and crafting buddy Ellen is a 9 year breast cancer survivor. I get to hang out and craft with Ellen on Monday (I can hardly wait).
All I can say is to get yourself a mammogram! Early detection is the key!

Thank You Rapid City Journal!
I have to thank the RC Journal for the tickets to last nights ice skating and gymnastics spectacular event- it was fantastic! There is nothing more special as to seeing your child's eye light up in true delight. Our seats were in the best spot ever- right in front of the gymnastics area- talk about AWESOME! The performances were top shelf and I'd say that if anyone paid the $100 to $125 price for the seats where we were at- they got their monies worth! Yes, it was that good! All of the male gymnasts were phenomenal and Johnathon Horton-made it known why he was an Olympian! His act was nothing short of being the best part of the show! The Hamm brothers floor routine was something to behold. You had to be there to witness it, everyone was applauding and stomping their feet. You too can see what we saw in January as it will air on NBC.

Trivia pays!
I've been a bit stressed today because of events and situations that are out of my control. I've been trying hard not to freak out about the house in England not being ready until OCTOBER-ugh! Just when you think that life doesn't have it's little rewards, it proves you wrong. I get a call letting me know that it's this guy named Mike at the Rapid City journal letting me know that I won their trivia contest and that I won 2 VIP tickets to the Dission Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular. Here's the information on it
Disson Skating and Progressive Insurance present a Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular featuring Olympic Medalists and internationally known performers, during the month-long grand opening celebration of the new Ice Arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. All seats are reserved, and tickets range from $45.00 to $125.00.
Nastia Liukin, who dazzled American audiences with her near-flawless routines to capture the all-around gymnastics gold medal in the Beijing Olympics and her friendly rival Shawn Johnson, who captured gold on the balance beam, will headline the Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular, Dec. 23, 2008, at The Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City. The show, complete with live performances by actress, singer-songwriter and dancer Raven, will be broadcast nationally on January 18, 2009 on NBC.
And where are we sitting? Right up in those $125 per person VIP seats! WOW, what a special treat that is going to be for Hannah and me!

How's your weather?
So here we are, getting ready for another blizzard. You too can go to weather.com type in my zip code 57719 and get that red flashing on your monitor. It's not that I hate winter, it's that I hate the harsh wind and the blizzard warnings. This will be my 6th winter here and let me tell you this year has been one heck of a roller coaster ride with the weather. I'm so glad that I bought that North Face parka when I did, LOL! We're expecting temperatures with the wind chill to be as low as -20-eeek!
Oh here's something else...our son will be downtown tonight for the annual JROTX ball with several other military cadets from neighboring schools. I'm glad that it's being held in a hotel. We're having our son pack a change of clothes his winter boots and a heavy winter jacket, gloves and a hat! We'll put extra money on his debit card so he can get a hotel room if need be. There's no way we're having out boy driving home in those kind of wintry conditions.
Here's the information that I pulled up from weather.com

Black Eye Friday
That's what our news paper is calling it- Black Eye Friday. Apparently people are getting killed in states other than New York, at a California Toys R Us store 2 people we killed when after they started shooting at one another inside of the store. Here in the Rapid City Walmart store a man (the police are still searching for him) punched a 15 year old girl in the throat knocking her out all because she had an X Box 360 game in her hand that he wanted.Where is the sanity in that??? Sure people should keep themselves in check BUT I think that retailers are to blame for the chaos that is happening across the nation at this time of year. The retailers put a handful of items on sale at some ridiculously low price and then have the nerve to act surprised when they have 2000 or more people waiting for doors to open the doors at 4 am- come on! I could see this train wreck about to happen 10 miles away, couldn't you? I'm surprised that more people were not hurt at the New York Walmart beyond the one employee that was trampled to death- Walmart management needs to shoulder some of this blame.
Our local Kohl's department store opened at 4 am this year and in an interview in our local news paper the store manager was reported to say that he was surprised to see the line wrapping around the outside of the store before they opened. My daughter and I were there 2 years ago when they opened at 5 am there was next to no one outside while shopping inside you could roll a bowling ball down the isles and not hit anyone. Apparently this year that was not the case as people were starting to line up outside around the store at 2:30 am in the frigid temperatures to have a chance at the elusive deal, if you ask me it's NUTS! Do I dare ask...what ever happened to "Jesus IS the reason for the season"?
My husband and I went to the mall yesterday for a few hours and you could roll a bowling ball down the mall and not hit anyone. There were no lines at any check-stands. We actually went into stores that had ZERO people in them with exception of a lone sales clerk or two. Any store that we had went to and bought something, we were the only people at the register. I think that retailers are going to have a very tough time this year. I'd say look for more deep pocket sales to happen before and after Christmas.

I'd say look for more deep pocket sales to happen before and after Christmas.

you heard it here first
In case you didn't know...today is world toilet day, check out the website http://www.worldtoilet.org/ But seriously...clean drinking water and good sanitation practices are limited to the so called civilized areas of the world. There are 2.6 billion people in the world in area where there are no toilets nor do they do practice any kind of sanitation.

how to keep occupied during a blizzard
There are days (like today) where you can't go outside and there isn't much one can do that doesn't involve electricity. Our power was going off and on continuously for hours. So I decided to occupy myself in other ways. Since I couldn't use my sewing machine which bummed me out or even an Ott light (I use one when doing counted cross stitching or when reading a book) I decided to clean out and rearrange the pantry and rearrange my cookbooks. After a few hours and that chore was done. Then I started on other parts of my kitchen and WOW what a difference that made! I really got into cleaning and took everything out of the refrigerator and washed it down inside and out! My kitchen is sparking clean and everything in it's place!
I was talking with my in-laws this afternoon and they heard about our area being pummeled with snow. I let them know that it was all true and then some. If any house on my street was to catch fire there would be no way anyone could get to them in time because of the huge snow drifts covering the street. I'm waiting to see if school will be closed tomorrow or just delayed by a few hours. There's no way any kind of vehicle never mind a huge school can get down some of these streets. The wind is whipping up again and at least this time I've got the patio furniture and the grill secured. Those 60 mph winds were wreaking havoc yesterday with my patio furniture and I was determined to win that battle (and I did). You can't be married to an engineer as many years as I have without some of his ingenuity rubbing off on you, LOL!
OOOh I better hurry and get this posted as the lights are beginning to flicker...that means power outages-again!
